This serves as a victory for all families affected by a violent crime and then had to deal with repudiations on top of losing a loved one.
Another strong social media backlash towards Momentum over the last 48 hours has resulted in the insurance giant to buckle under pressure. They announced on Tuesday afternoon that it would pay out the death benefit to Natalie Ganas, the widow of Nathan Ganas.
Momentum’s CEO Johann le Roux who previously insisted that the company had every right to reject the claim, due to material non-disclosure of pre-existing condition.
According to the Momentum statement on their website, the company referred to Ganas’ case created an impression that life insurance companies are looking for reasons not to pay claims.
It comes as a great surprise that Momentum announced that they created a policy to “pay out an amount equal to the death benefit (limited to maximum of R 3 mil) in the case of violent crime, regardless of previous medical history”.
Very interesting, because this will put an instant pressure on the rest of the insurance companies to do the same, or be left behind.
Upon application for new cover at Momentum the client is responsible to disclose medical information.
“This is when you need to share all your medical and health information. If your health deteriorates after commencement of the policy, there is no need for you to inform Momentum – your claim will be completely valid if the information provided at the start of the policy was accurate.”
In other words they will still use your medical aid claims history at claim stage to ‘validate’ your policy as per normal.
The importance of complete disclosure is imperative.
One word of advice, don’t fill in any life insurance application with any insurance company, unless you have your full medical aid claims history from your health provider with you. This way you will not leave any important information out by accident.
Let us help you ensure your policy will pay out.
